Beginner's Guide to Managing Your Minecraft Server

Understanding the Control Panel

The control panel is your command center. From this web interface, you can:

  • Start and stop your server
  • Access the console to run commands
  • Manage your files (plugins, configurations, worlds)
  • Monitor performance (CPU, RAM, connected players)
  • Schedule tasks (automatic restarts, backups)

Take the time to familiarize yourself with each section — it will save you a lot of hassle later on.

Essential Configuration Files

server.properties

This is the main file for your server. Here are the most important settings:

# Server name displayed in the list
motd=My Server IndiaMineHost

# Default game mode (survival, creative, adventure)
gamemode=survival

# Difficulty (peaceful, easy, normal, hard)
difficulty=normal

# Max number of players
max-players=4

# Render distance in chunks (lower = better performance)
view-distance=10

# Enable/disable PvP
pvp=true

# Enable whitelist
white-list=false

# Spawn protection (radius in blocks)
spawn-protection=16

After each modification, restart your server to apply the changes.

spigot.yml / paper.yml

If you are using Spigot or Paper, these files offer advanced performance settings. The default values are suitable for most cases, but here are some recommended adjustments:

In spigot.yml:

settings:
  save-user-cache-on-stop-only: true
  bungeecord: false
world-settings:
  default:
    mob-spawn-range: 6
    entity-activation-range:
      animals: 24
      monsters: 32
      misc: 8

In paper.yml:

settings:
  async-chunks:
    enable: true
world-settings:
  default:
    optimize-explosions: true
    disable-chest-cat-detection: true
    max-auto-save-chunks-per-tick: 8

Essential Commands

Here are the commands you will use most often from the console or in-game:

Player Management

Command Description
/op <player> Grant operator rights
/deop <player> Remove operator rights
/kick <player> [reason] Kick a player
/ban <player> [reason] Ban a player
/pardon <player> Unban a player
/whitelist add <player> Add to whitelist

World Management

Command Description
/time set day Set to day
/weather clear Clear the rain
/gamerule keepInventory true Keep inventory on death
/gamerule mobGriefing false Prevent mobs from destroying
/difficulty <level> Change the difficulty
/tp <player> <x> <y> <z> Teleport a player

Server Management

Command Description
/stop Properly stop the server
/save-all Force a backup
/list See connected players
/seed Display the world seed

Securing Your Server

Level 1 — Basics

  1. Enable the whitelist if you are playing privately
  2. Only give OP rights to trusted people — an OP can do anything
  3. Install CoreProtect to track all player actions

Level 2 — Advanced Protection

  1. WorldGuard — Protect the spawn and important areas
  2. GriefPrevention — Allow players to claim their land
  3. Anti-cheat — Install a plugin like NoCheatPlus to detect cheaters

Level 3 — Network Configuration

  1. DDoS protection is included with IndiaMineHost — no configuration needed
  2. Do not publicly share your server IP if you are playing privately
  3. Change the default port if possible

Optimizing Performance

Monitoring Performance

Use the command /tps (with Paper/Spigot) to check ticks per second:

  • 20 TPS = perfect performance
  • 15-19 TPS = slight drops, acceptable
  • < 15 TPS = issues, investigation needed

Common Causes of Lag

  1. Too many entities — poorly designed mob farms, items on the ground
  2. Excessively loaded chunks — reduce the view-distance
  3. Resource-intensive plugins — identify culprits with /timings (Paper)
  4. Intensive redstone — complex redstone circuits impact TPS
  5. Too many players — respect your plan's limit

Quick Fixes

  • /kill @e[type=item] — Removes all items on the ground
  • /kill @e[type=!player] — Removes all entities (caution!)
  • Reduce view-distance to 6-8 in server.properties
  • Install the ClearLag plugin for automatic cleanup

Backups and Restoration

Why Backup?

Disasters happen: a griefer destroys everything, a plugin bugs out, an update corrupts the world. Without a backup, everything is lost.

How to Backup

  1. Manual backup: From the panel, go to files and download your world folder
  2. Automatic backup: Set up a scheduled task in the panel for regular backups
  3. Backup plugin: Install a plugin like DriveBackupV2 to backup to Google Drive

Restoring a Backup

  1. Stop the server
  2. Delete or rename the current world folder
  3. Upload your backup
  4. Restart the server

Updating Your Server

When to Update?

  • When a new version of Minecraft is released (wait for Paper/Spigot to support it)
  • When a security vulnerability is discovered
  • When your players want new features

How to Update

  1. Backup everything before touching anything
  2. Download the new server version (Paper/Spigot)
  3. Replace the server's .jar file in the panel
  4. Check that your plugins are compatible with the new version
  5. Restart and test

Managing a Minecraft server is learned through practice. Don't hesitate to experiment — with backups, you can always revert. Good luck with your IndiaMineHost server!
